Rex Brown To Release ‘Smoke On This’ Album, Listen To ‘Crossing Lines’

The album will be the first time in Brown’s career in which he will serve as both lead vocalist and guitarist in a band.

Published

on

Former Pantera bassist Rex Brown has set Smoke On This as the title of his debut solo album, due on July 28 via Entertainment One (eOne). The disc will be the first time in Brown’s career in which he will serve as both lead vocalist and guitarist in a band.

Everyone who pre-orders Smoke On This on PledgeMusic will get a digital download of the new album on street date. Once you pre-order, you get instant access to a special part of the site via the “AccessPass.” There, Rex will bring you into his little private, cool world. You will hear streams of new songs, see video teasers of recording in the studio, check out unreleased photos and much, much more. Your first update is an instant download of the song “Crossing Lines.”

Brown wields a six-string guitar as confidently as he wore the bass in Pantera and Down. His engaging voice crackles with easygoing spirit and truth-telling power. It’s a crunchy drawl that’s down-to-earth, grippingly relatable, charmingly welcoming, and gritty, somewhere between the achingly resonant spiritual shamanism of Tom Waits and the instantly recognizable everyman AM radio vibes of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

After a season away to gather his wits about him, rediscover his own roots, and assemble a group of players ready to help him execute his vision for the days ahead, Rex Brown re-emerges with a semi truck’s worth of rock n’ roll tunes as honest and sincere as they come. The new album is the sound of the man’s own truth, forthright and ego-free. As he likes to say, “You’re only as good as your word and your word better be good.”

Rex’s solo album is full of mojo and the force of character, determination, and nerve. He tracked lead vocals, rhythm guitars, and bass, working with his primary collaborator and old friend Lance Harvill, a Nashville-based guitarist and songwriter, on the album’s songs. “Lance was and is my main man on this. Everything we did was finely tuned, both musically and brotherly.”

Drums were tracked by Christopher Williams, himself no stranger to diverse tastes, from funk music to punk. His talent has been utilized by country music star Lee Greenwood, the reconstituted Blackfoot and most recently, power metal legends Accept. The album was produced by New Yorker-turned-Nashville-transplant Caleb Sherman, a multi-instrumentalist with work on records by Little Big Town and Porter Block, among others. “Caleb produced the project from a musician’s standpoint,” adds Brown. “Not just a typical producer’s standpoint, which was something I definitely needed. Between Caleb and Lance, we were a force to be reckoned with. They really pulled out the best in me.” Peter Keyes, known for his work with Lynyrd Skynyrd, can also be heard on a few tracks. All bass tracking came from Rex himself as well.

“My motto these days is ‘Shake some shit up,'” Brown declares. “I’ve had my ups and downs, like anybody in this business. I wanted to feel like a true artist again, where I can write and record songs without worrying about any of the bullshit. This is just something else I’m doing for fun, man. And musical freedom. Fun has to come into it or I’m not going to do it. I’ve had a tremendous career and now I feel like I’m twenty-five years old again. This has given me that freedom I needed.”

“I’ve got so much more in me,” he enthuses. “I’m just getting my feet wet.”

Anvil To Release New Album ‘Pounding The Pavement’

Of course there are bands that have sold more albums, but few have earned as much respect from their colleagues.

Published

on

Of course there are bands that have garnered higher chart positions, sold more albums and filled bigger venues than Anvil. Yet there are few metal acts that have earned as much respect from their colleagues as the Canadian act surrounding vocalist/guitarist Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner. The most renowned Anvil aficionados include, among others, international stars such as Metallica and the late Lemmy of Motörhead, who have expressed their unreserved admiration time and again. The reasons for this evident respect are obvious: since 1978, Anvil have been the epitome of a passionate heavy metal band that refuses to be thrown off course by setbacks, adverse conditions and inconsistencies on the business side of things. Their latest album Pounding The Pavement proves their impressive stamina: never before have Anvil sounded as diverse, determined and inspiring.

Why has Pounding The Pavement turned into such an awesome offering? Kudlow’s explanation is simple: “The songwriting process started immediately after the work on our previous album, Anvil Is Anvil, had been completed,” he says. “So our thoughts instantly turned to the future again. After Anvil Is Anvil had been cut, everybody knew what we had just delivered and what Anvil’s future should sound like.” Despite the diverse range of their ideas, Kudlow, Reiner and their bassist Chris Robertson have succeeded in filling the typical trademarks of this unusual band with life once again – which is an important aspect for every Anvil release, after all tradition and reliability play an essential role in this group. Kudlow: “Of course we always allow inspirations from earlier recordings to seep in, but always with an emphasis on evolving the characteristic Anvil sound. Lots of fans keep asking us to play the way we did in the so-called good old days. That’s why I try from time to time to pick up on that exciting feel of our older material. Mind you, it’s always exclusively about the basic atmosphere of that time, never about copying an older song.”

Pounding The Pavement was produced at the Soundlodge studios in Rhauderfehn in the northwest of Germany, where Anvil found not only the necessary peace and seclusion to concentrate on their recordings, but also met in studio owner Jörg Uken the ideal producer for their ambitioned work. Talking of which: the programmatic album title Pounding The Pavement is a synonym for the consistently serious challenge of ensuring Anvil’s financial survival. Kudlow: “I feel nothing could describe the way we’ve been working for the past forty years better than Pounding The Pavement: Anvil have tried for four decades to earn enough money to survive and continue to make music.”

Pounding The Pavement will be released on January 19, 2018 through SPV/Steamhammer as a digipak version (+1 bonus track and poster), 2LP gatefold coloured version, download and stream.

Black Sabbath To Release ‘The End’ Live Concert In November

The End captures a once-in-a-career performance, an essential snapshot of musical history and a fitting farewell to true innovators and original heavy metal icons.

Published

on

Almost five decades ago, the toll of a bell and rolling thunder marked the conception of an ear splittingly monolithic riff. In that moment, Black Sabbath and the sound of Heavy Metal were forged. The band embarked on what Ozzy describes as “the most incredible adventure you could think of,” a journey that would go on to define a genre.

The End, to be released on November 17, 2017, captured the final destination of that adventure – an unforgettable farewell show at the Genting Arena in Black Sabbath’s hometown of Birmingham. Filmed February 4, 2017, The End captures the legendary line-up celebrating their storied career, marking the closure of a monumental chapter in rock history.

With a hit packed set list including “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” “War Pigs” and many more, the high production values, visual effects and pyrotechnics wowed fans, as the band delivered the most emotionally charged show of their lives. “Because it was Birmingham, it was a special night for us,” said Tony. “It was great to look out and know that all these people have come to see us. What a great feeling. There’s nothing like it.”

All visual formats feature special bonus material of the band playing a selection of their favorite songs not played on tour. These intimate live sessions at Angelic Studios were recorded in the days after their final live performance, and mark the band’s final studio recordings. Geezer said, “It will never be The End for me. I’ll always be a part of Sabbath, and Sabbath will always be a part of me”.

Following last month’s world premiere of a companion documentary film in over 1,700 cinemas around the world, Eagle Vision will release the full live show of The End on November 17 on DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD, double CD, triple 180gm vinyl and a limited deluxe collector’s edition. A limited number of exclusive merchandise bundles are also available at PledgeMusic.

Culture Club To Release ‘Live At Wembley’ In December

All four original members reunited for one final show together at the historic Wembley Arena in London.

Published

on

For this very special hometown show, all four original members of Culture Club – Boy George, Jon Moss, Roy Hay and Mikey Craig – reunited for one final show together at the historic Wembley Arena in London.

As Boy George says, “We were thrilled to be back home for the final show of such a highly successful reunion tour. Being able to document this show on film before our hometown fans, friends and family, with all the original members of the band, where it all began for us in London in 1981, makes this concert film release that much more special for our fans to enjoy for many years to come.”

Culture Club returned home for the holidays in 2016 and performed live at Wembley Arena, after a hugely successful 60-city world tour. Featuring an explosive horn section and mind-blowing backup soul singers, the band ignites the stage before a sold-out crowd, as Boy George commands the catwalk with his masterful charm and smooth soulful voice, performing the band’s biggest hits, including “Karma Chameleon,” “It’s A Miracle,” “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,” “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya,” “Church Of The Poison Mind,” and “Miss Me Blind.” They close the show with a rousing cover of T. Rex’s “Bang A Gong (Get It On).”

Live At Wembley showcases why Culture Club’s unique pop, soul and reggae styles resonate with fans 35 years after the 1982 release of their Kissing To Be Clever debut album. It was produced by award-winning producer, Barry Summers of Rock Fuel Media (Guns N’ Roses, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction, VH1’s Decades Rock Live Series) and directed by Mark Ritchie (Madonna, Kanye West, Jane’s Addiction). Special Features include exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage with the band members as they discuss their illustrious career and the significance of this hometown iconic live performance.

The state-of-the-art DVD, Blu-Ray, CD and Vinyl package is out December 8 by Rock Fuel Media, distributed by Cleopatra Records. The concert will be broadcast on TV in 2018, details of which will be announced soon.
