Mr. Big ‘Defying Gravity’ With New Album Set For Release In July

The band convened in a Los Angeles studio and in a matter of six days, the boundless result of all that musical talent is “Defying Gravity.”

“Alright, we’re rolling…”

The call went out. Time for a new Mr. Big album. They convened in a Los Angeles studio and in a matter of six days, the boundless result of all that musical talent is Defying Gravity, with the release of their ninth original studio album and start of a new worldwide tour.

Set for release July 7 on Frontiers Music Srl, Defying Gravity will be available at traditional retail and all digital service providers, as will a deluxe edition version with CD and bonus DVD that features music videos and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the new album. The album will also be made available on vinyl in the coming months.

Defying Gravity deftly showcases that patented Mr. Big blend of crunch and melody, from the freight-train ride of opening cut “Open Your Eyes” to the harmony-laden wonderment of “Damn I’m in Love Again” to the grateful/wistful nostalgia of “1992” (recalling the days when the band was flying high atop the singles charts with their international #1 smash “To Be With You”) to the barnburning slide-blues closer, “Be Kind.” Overall, Defying Gravity is prime evidence that the only thing Mr. Big remains tethered to is their ongoing pursuit of achieving creative excellence.

Original members Eric Martin (lead vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitars), Billy Sheehan (bass) and Pat Torpey (drums) reunited with producer Kevin Elson (who was behind the boards for the band’s 1989 self-titled debut, 1991’s Lean Into It and 1993’s Bump Ahead) for an intensive six-day recording session in Los Angeles. While Torpey was unable to perform some of the songs on Defying Gravity due to a recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, Matt Starr has been filling in for him on a majority of the album. Starr also been touring with the band for the past couple of years, with Torpey able to play a couple of songs at each stop.

“It was great to get back in the studio with our original producer, Kevin Elson,” says guitarist Paul Gilbert. “Kevin recorded all of our original classic albums from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and we immediately felt that magic chemistry with him on Defying Gravity. We basically played live in the studio. Over the years, we’ve all had a chance to experiment with every recording technique possible, but it’s still always the best just to play together as a band. Most of my guitar solos were tracked live with the band. I’ve worked hard on my improvisation in the last few years, and it really paid off on this record…both melodically, and on the face-melting stuff.”

Mr. Big is gearing up for the launch their latest worldwide tour which starts May 31 in Milwaukee, WI at the Potowatami Casino.

“2017 is filling up quickly with tour dates all around the world,” proclaims Gilbert. “I can’t wait to play the new songs, and of course our favorites from the old days like ‘Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy’ ‘Just Take My Heart,’ ‘Green Tinted Sixties Mind,’ ‘Wild World,’ and ‘To Be With You.’”

Trailer Released For Reissue Of Whitesnake’s 1987 Album

The classic album turns 30 this year and the band is celebrating with four new versions, including an expansive boxed set.

Published

on

Whitesnake had already released a string of Top 10 albums in the UK, Europe and Japan before the band conquered the entire world with its 1987 record, which was certified multi-platinum and featured the smash single “Here I Go Again.” The classic album turns 30 this year and the band is celebrating with four new versions, including an expansive boxed set.

Whitesnake: Super Deluxe Edition will be available on October 6 for $49.98. The 4-CD/DVD collection includes the original album with newly remastered sound, unreleased live and studio recordings, classic music videos, concert footage, a thirty-minute documentary, featuring a new interview with David Coverdale, Whitesnake’s founder and lead singer. The music comes with a sixty-page hardbound book that’s filled with rare and unseen photos from the era, an extended essay based on new interviews with Coverdale, plus a booklet of the album’s lyrics, handwritten by Coverdale. The audio will also be available via digital download and streaming services.

Three other versions of Whitesnake will also be available the same day. A Deluxe Edition will be available in both 2-CD ($19.98) and 2-LP ($29.98) versions, each including the newly remastered album expanded with a selection of unreleased bonus recordings. A single-disc version of the newly remastered album will also be available.

This also marks the first release under a newly signed catalog deal with Whitesnake and Rhino Entertainment, the catalog division of Warner Music Group. This new deal includes both the North American and Japanese rights, marking the first time a substantial amount of the Whitesnake catalog will reside under Warner Music Group worldwide.

“It gives me great joy to finally have so much of my Whitesnake catalog all under the same roof with the Warner family and I’m thrilled to be now working with this tremendous team on a worldwide basis,” says Coverdale. “I have great memories of being with Warner back in my days with Deep Purple. Then when I was with Geffen, they were distributed by Warner, so it feels like coming home to now have Whitesnake there. This elaborate reissue is the perfect project to kick off the new relationship.”

“Whitesnake is one of the all-time great rock n’ roll bands, with David being an absolute icon as a vocalist and front man,” says Rhino president Mark Pinkus. “We are absolutely thrilled to now have so much of the Whitesnake catalog with Warner on a global basis and are excited for the fans to see what great releases we have planned for the coming years.”

Soon after its release in April 1987, Whitesnake became a huge success around the world, selling multi million copies. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard album chart and spawned four popular singles: “Still Of The Night,” “Give Me All Your Love,” “Is This Love” (which reached #2) and the #1 hit “Here I Go Again.”

Whitesnake: Super Deluxe Edition comes with an entire disc of unreleased live performances featuring Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell and Tommy Aldridge, recorded during the band’s 1987-88 tour. The music includes live versions of several tracks from 1987, plus Whitesnake classics “Slide It In,” “Love Ain’t No Stranger” and “Slow An’ Easy.”

An additional disc spotlights the creative process behind Whitesnake with a selection of elevent unreleased demo and rehearsal recordings, including early versions of nearly every song on the album called 87 Evolutions. The final disc introduces newly remixed versions the album’s four singles, and includes rare radio mixes, as well as songs from 87 Versions, an EP released exclusively in Japan.

The DVD from Whitesnake: Super Deluxe Edition includes music videos for the four singles, all of which have been carefully restored and remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound for the first time ever. In addition, the DVD also features a new thirty-minute documentary about the making of Whitesnake, a new promo video made especially for this set of the 1988 version of “Here I Go Again” and unreleased live footage from the 1987-88 tour.

According to Billboard, a Whitesnake home video will follow on Record Store Black Friday (November 24) as well as a coffee table book chronicling “The Purple Album” cycle from 2015. An all-new Whitesnake studio album is planned for 2018, along with a world tour.

“It was a lot of fun to do,” Coverdale told Billboard of the Whitesnake reissue, “because I don’t go back a lot. I kind of learn from the past to apply those lessons to the future and the present. But my gratitude for (the album) is beyond words. I’ve only ever gone into a studio to try to improve on the last record…There was no, ‘Right, I’m gonna sell thirty-odd million fucking records!’ It was amazing, just amazing, so it’s great to revisit all of this.”

Coverdale also revealed that he has been getting together with Whitesnake guitarists Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra for regular writing sessions for a new album that will lively arrive late spring of 2018. “I’m actually very excited about it because it’s the first opportunity both Reb and Joel and I have actually had to sit down and write together,” Coverdale said of what will be Whitesnake’s first set of original material since 2011’s Forevermore. “There’s a lot of what one would refer to as arena rock; Reb and I were talking the other night over dinner and he said, ‘Man, there’s so many songs here that no matter where we play — Portugal or Brazil or Tokyo — they’re gonna get this hook. They’re gonna be punching the fuckin’ air and have a great night.’ And I went, ‘Oh, absolutely — and more than usual,’ which is great. I can’t do throwaway shit. The only reason I’m doing this record are the songs are gonna be a great Whitesnake album for Whitesnake fans — and the band. It’s very exciting.”

Watch James Hetfield unbox the reissue:

Master Of Puppets was released on February 24, 1986 and was the first album Metallica recorded after signing a major label deal with Elektra Records.

The set only reached No. 29 on the Billboard album chart but has sold over six million copies in the U.S. since.

It is the last record to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed later that year in a tour bus crash.

Several songs from the album are still staples of Metallica’s live set, including “Battery,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” and the title track.

Many fans consider it Metallica’s finest album, a fact that the band acknowledged by playing it in its entirety on a European tour in 2006.

“Metallica: Back To The Front,” the definitive story of Master Of Puppets and the tour that followed its release, hit bookstores and online sellers last September. A very special Collector’s Edition of the book was made available two weeks earlier through Metallica.com and MoonriseMedia.net.

“That album, it’s interesting, because from the moment it was released, it never went away,” Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett said last year while promoting the book. “It still has not and there are no signs of it going away at all.”

“It was still rebellious,” Metallica frontman James Hetfield said. “Back then, it was still the four of us in a van out to conquer the world.”

“I really feel that a lot of the music on Master Of Puppets, we pulled it out of a deep place,” Hammett added. “A lot of it, it’s just so emotional, from the music to the lyrics to the guitar solos to even the arrangements. It’s so dramatic.”

Butcher Babies Embrace Lust And Power With New Album

Butcher Babies will release their third album, ‘Lilith,’ in the fall via Century Media.

Published

on

Butcher Babies will release their third album, Lilith, in the fall via Century Media. The follow-up to 2015’s Take It Like A Man was produced by Steve Evetts and marks the band’s recording debut with new drummer, Chase Brickenden, who replaced Chris Warner last year.

Butcher Babies co-vocalist Heidi Shepherd stated about the Lilith title and cover artwork, which can be seen below: “Historically, Lilith has become demonized as a representation of promiscuity and disobedience. We, however, see her as a positive figure. A symbol of autonomy, sexual equality, and full control over your own destiny.

“Lilith is the supreme representation of the left-hand path woman: independent, having discarded the patriarchal yoke, and not afraid to use all the tools available to her, including her sexuality, to gain the most out of existence. The eels in the cover art represent sleek symbolism of new beginnings and adventure.

“With this album, we have musically taken a leap through old boundaries and landed in new oceans. It is said that a the dream or visions of eels is confirmation that the path we currently lead is the right one.

“In this new chapter of Butcher Babies, we welcome evolution as we bare ourselves with Lilith.”

Added co-vocalist Carla Harvey: “When we were thinking of titles for our album, we wanted to find something that embodied sensuality, lust, danger and power. We kept going back to Lilith. We researched Lilith and her origins in different cultures and forms and knew that this figure, once feared but now a beautiful, symbolic middle finger to repression, would be a perfect representation of our album.

“The cover art we created with our graphic artist perfectly pulls together the last year we’ve spent working on Lilith.

“I’ve always loved water themes and there is something terrifying yet calming about the deep sea; submersing yourself in it could be the death of you, yet at the same time it’s cleansing and renewing.

“With this album we dove in fully and drowned ourselves in emotion, sexuality and even turmoil, and let the two-headed beast we created has emerged even stronger.”

The disc’s release date and the video for the first single will be unveiled next week.
