Queensryche – Tribe

By Chris Neal on July 17, 2005

The return – at least part-time – of guitarist Chris DeGarmo raised high hopes for a return to form for these Seattle prog-rockers. And while Tribe has its moments, they mostly belong to the churning rhythm section; the songs and sound don’t meet the possibly over-inflated expectations.
What’s been missing from Queensryche for some time now – even before DeGarmo’s departure – is ambition; what the elder President Bush used to call “the vision thing.” Albums like Operation: Mindcrime and Empire are considered classics not out of idle nostalgia but because they plowed confidently through the boundaries of what hard-rock bands could sound like, sing about and aspire to. That’s a valuable function, and one this band seems to have simply abdicated.
There are glimmers of hope in Tribe’s energy and groove – make no mistake, it’s a pleasant listen. But with or without DeGarmo, they’ll have to dig a little deeper next time to make Queensryche truly relevant again.
