Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein Signs Deal With EMP Label Group, Announces New Doyle Album

The former Misfits guitarist signed a deal to release ‘As We Die,’ the upcoming LP from Doyle, and distribute all releases for his Monsterman Records label.

As announced on the Black Carpet at the The Epiphone Revolver Music Awards, former Misfits guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein has signed a label and distribution deal with EMP Label Group, who will not only release As We Die, the upcoming sophomore LP from the legendary guitarist’s eponymous project Doyle, but distribute all releases for his Monsterman Records label.

EMP, the label vessel of Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, with operations headed up by former Corporate Punishment President/A&R/Marketing exec Thom Hazaert, home to artists including A Killer’s Confession, Motograter, Heaven Below (featuring Patrick Kennison of Lita Ford/Union Underground), Broken Teeth, Doll Skin, Helstar, Cage9, Green Death, Arise in Chaos, former Faith No More vocalist Chuck Mosley, and many more, started out with deep ties into the Doyle camp, according to EMP’s Hazaert.

“I worked really closely with Bruce (Miyaki – Doyle’s Manager) and Monsterman on (Doyle’s 2013 release) Abominator, and I was actually the marketing director out of the gate on that release. Over the years, I’ve stayed involved, and we’re all good friends, and with David (Ellefson), who also has a great relationship with Doyle, eventually as EMP came to fruition the conversation inevitably came up about seeing if there was a fit there. With everything else going on in all of our worlds, it took a bit of a detour to finally get here, but I can’t express how excited we are to finally be able to put this all together. The legacy of someone like Doyle, who is such a legendary talent, is always such an amazing gift when it comes to putting out records, especially for a label like EMP, where we are all huge, genuine music fans. And there’s really not many out there who can hold a candle to Doyle, in terms of talent or legacy.”

EMP President David Ellefson agrees. “I’ve always loved Doyle and we’ve had a great relationship that goes back a long time. We’d started some talk last year when Doyle and Alissa (White-Gluz) came out to do some stuff with Metal Allegiance, and it just became an ongoing conversation over the past year. Now that it’s official, we’re extremely excited to be able to not only push out this new Doyle record, which is amazing, but all the killer Monsterman titles via EMP.”

Says Doyle, “When Dave came to me with an offer for our new CD As We Die it was a no brainer. He has been a good friend of mine for 20 plus years, and has never done me wrong, and in this business that’s unheard of. We didn’t want to release it ourselves on Monsterman, we wanted a bigger push and EMP has a lot of exciting things happening in 2017 that will do that for us.”

Doyle the current project of Von Frankenstein, with Cancerslug vocalist Alex “Wolfman” Story, and a current lineup rounded out by bassist Brandon Strate and drummer Brandon Pertzborn, continues the lineage of Doyle’s former projects, pairing crushing metal riffs with ferocious punk rock swagger and the theatrical intensity one would expect from one of the reigning kings, and erstwhile creators, of Horror-Core.

In addition to the upcoming sophomore release from Doyle, EMP/Monsterman will release several limited edition vinyl configurations, as well as a CD reissue of Doyle’s critically-acclaimed Abominator, the upcoming LP from LA industrial metal mainstays Dead Girls Corp., and several additional 2017 releases to-be-announced.

Doyle has also announced an extensive European tour in February, including several dates in the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, and more. VIP and meet and greet passes are available for purchase at officialdoyle.com.

Steve Vai’s Favored Nations Partners With Mascot Label Group

In addition to all future Favored Nations products, Mascot Label Group will also manage the re-release of the label’s back catalogue.

Published

on

Mascot Label Group has announced a new and exciting alliance with guitar legend Steve Vai’s Favored Nations Records label.

This strategic partnership is a reflection of the synergy created by the respect that Vai’s Favored Nations has garnered as the record industry’s leading boutique guitar-oriented recording label, and the strength offered by Mascot Label Group as one of the bigger, still growing and dependable independent purveyors of recorded music in the world.

Ed Van Zijl of Mascot Label Group says: “This is another great step for Mascot Label Group. We are always looking to move forward and collaborate with the best musicians and minds in the business, so we are very excited to be working with the prestigious Favored Nations Entertainment and with the great Steve Vai. Our future together will be very exciting.”

Steve Vai will continue to spearhead his label’s artists and repertoire department, but Favored Nations Entertainment will now benefit from the advantages of Mascot’s well-established business structure, which will provide strong marketing, publicity, and distribution on a worldwide basis.

Vai says: “We are absolutely thrilled that Favored Nations will be partnering with the Mascot label in Mascot overseeing all Favored Nations day-to-day biz. Ed Van Zijl and Mascot have a powerful infrastructure including marketing, accounting, distribution and artist development and have always been a tremendously artist friendly camp. This partnership will also be freeing up more of my time to focus on the A&R function I enjoy most in owning a label.

“And I’m happy to report my first signing under this new deal, The Mutual Admiration Society presented by Sterling Ball, John Ferraro and Jim Cox. This record is a dream treat for the lovers of melodic beautiful-sounding guitar. Along with the special guest artists who have contributed to this record, Sterling Ball’s unique technique and tone on the guitar is a surprise highlight.”

In addition to all future Favored Nations products, Mascot Label Group will also manage the re-release of the label’s back catalogue.

Founded in 1999, Favored Nations provides a platform for artists of the highest caliber to deliver exciting, energetic, and emotional performances in a market that was virtually invented by founder Steve Vai. Favored Nations artists have included Johnny A., Larry Carlton, Peppino D’Agostino, Marty Friedman, Johnny Hiland, Allan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson, Stanley Jordan, Steve Lukather, Novecento, John Petrucci, Eric Sardinas, Neal Schon, Dave Weiner, The Yardbirds and Dweezil Zappa, among others.

Stone Temple Pilots Announce ‘The X Factor’ Singer Jeff Gutt As New Frontman

Gutt originally auditioned for Stone Temple Pilots in September 2016 and was officially named the band’s new singer in May 2017.

Published

on

Stone Temple Pilots have selected one-time “The X Factor” contestant Jeff Gutt as their new vocalist. Gutt, who was a runner-up in season three of the reality television music competition show created by Simon Cowell, was announced as the band’s latest singer during a SiriusXM special earlier tonight (Tuesday, November 14) hosted by Eddie Trunk.

Gutt originally auditioned for Stone Temple Pilots in September 2016 and was officially named the band’s new singer in May 2017. He has spent the last year secretly writing and recording new material in Redondo Beach, California with bandmembers Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz.

Robert DeLeo said that he first found out about Gutt while he was on the road with the Hollywood Vampires. “We were playing Pine Knob — I don’t know what it’s called now; I know it as Pine Knob — up in Detroit, which is where [Jeff is] from,” the bassist said. “And after the show, there was a musician who said, ‘Hey, man, you should check this guy out.’ And that’s where I kind of heard of him first — it was through that guy. And it just happened that it came together like that.”

Regarding how he came to try out for STP, Jeff said: “I had heard about [the audition process], but I was on tour in the Middle East with my band at the time, so I was, like, doing my own thing, and that was everything that I had going on. And then when I got back, I was driving and I heard… I can’t remember what song it was, but a Stone Temple Pilots song came on the radio. So I called my buddy in New York who knows everybody in the music industry, and I was, like, ‘Hey, did they ever find a singer?’ And he was, like, ‘You know what? I’ll send ’em your stuff right now.’ And three days later, I got a call.”

Gutt said that he felt like he had the STP gig “before I even got in the room [with the other guys], to tell you the truth, just because if you don’t feel that way, you’re probably not gonna get it. You have to be confident,” he explained. “I mean, not cocky confidence, but I know my shit, I know what I’m doing. I’ve studied my craft. I’ve studied [original Stone Temple Pilots singer] Scott [Weiland] and the people Scott studied, and other singers of the era. I’ve really put in a lot of time into that, and if you’re not willing to do all of that, you’re not gonna be on the level to even be around these guys.”

Dean DeLeo said he and his bandmates “wanted someone who would not only do our earlier songs justice, but would also write new songs and carve out a different path forward with us. It took some time, but we found our guy,” he said.

Robert DeLeo aded: “Talk about a happy accident. It was clear right away that Jeff had the range to sing vocally challenging songs like ‘Piece Of Pie’ and ‘Interstate Love Song.’ But we soon discovered that he also has a great ear for melody and knew how to write a song.”

According to Kretz, “The chemistry was there from the start, and Jeff kept coming up with one great melody after another. We ended up finishing 14 songs, which is the most that Stone Temple Pilots has ever recorded for an album,” he revealed.

Jeff said that becoming Stone Temple Pilots’ new frontman feels like “joining Led Zeppelin, because, to me, they’re my Led Zeppelin.”

“No one will ever fill Scott’s shoes and I’m not trying to — he’s a legend, Gutt said. “But these songs deserve to be performed and people want to hear them. I’m just honored that the guys chose me to help them continue to build this band’s legacy.”
